The Rocks
It’s the start of the new year and I have been neglecting this blog for a while. So it’s time to start my travel tales again. To start things off, we are off to Down Under.
Anyone who has visited Sydney would have heard of “The Rocks”. Located near the Sydney Harbour Bridge, this area was the site of the first settlement when convicts from England arrived here. It used to be a slum in it’s early years but has now evolved into a tourist attraction in it’s own right. During my first visit to Sydney (you can read it here) I didn’t get a chance to visit The Rocks. So on my second visit, I made sure to see as much as I could of it.

Osaka Castle is probably one of the most well known sights of Osaka. This distinctive castle is not to be missed if you happen to visit the city. A relatively modern reconstruction, this castle is equipped with modern facilities like elevators and air conditioning to make your visit a pleasant one. The park around the castle is also a great place for photography especially during spring time when the cherry blossoms are out.

Staying in a Traditional Machiya

On the other end of the accommodation scale are the ryokans and machiyas which offer a more traditional experience.

I’m sure we are all familiar with Starbucks. The ubiquitous Starbucks cafe with it’s distinctive logo and modern style can be found in almost every major city in the world. For any traveller (me included), the promise of a cup of hot java accompanied with free wifi is a comforting thought when you are on the road.

One of the more well trodden places in Kyoto is the Araishiyama Bamboo Forest. This is located on the western outskirts of Kyoto and is easily reached by train from Kyoto Station in around 15 minutes.
