Lucerne

Lucerne

I thought that I should try to finish blogging about the places in Switzerland that I’ve visited since I’ve been here a combined total of more than 2 months during one of my previous jobs.

Lucerne (Luzern in German) is easily one of the most popular cities in Switzerland to visit for any tourist. I too made my way there on my second day when I was based in Switzerland for the first time.  The city is built beside a lake and surrounded by snowcapped mountains. It really fits the perfect fairy tale description of a Swiss town. Continue reading “Lucerne”

Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls

One of the most well known waterfalls in the world is the Niagara Falls which lies on the border between the USA and Canada, and drains Lake Erie into Lake Ontario via the Niagara River. We got to visit this magnificent wonder of nature in 2003. Taking a tour bus from New York, we followed a local tour group that stays overnight at Niagara Falls. This is also a good way to spend a weekend excursion when in New York. East Germany – Eisenach and Marksuhl

East Germany – Eisenach and Marksuhl

On the topic of business trips again, sometimes I do get to go to places that I wouldn’t normally venture if I was a tourist. Once, I had to go to a small obscure village in the former East Germany to commission some third party equipment that we had to integrate into a manufacturing line. Being slightly older and wiser now after a few trips, I started to do some research as to how I was going to get there. Continue reading “East Germany – Eisenach and Marksuhl”

That First Business Trip

That First Business Trip

For those of us working, I guess the first time you get asked, or commanded to go on a business trip can be both exciting and frightening at the same time. Depending on the purpose of the trip and destination, it can be insightful or stressful. My first call came in 1995 when I had just joined a MNC as an engineer. My boss told me that I was required to go to New York, USA, to attend a training session for one of the high-tech equipment that we operated in the factory. Yippee! I thought to myself, I’m going to New York! Continue reading “That First Business Trip”

Roman Times in Regensburg

Roman Times in Regensburg

Although not as well known as it’s bigger neighbor, Munich, this former Roman city is a quiet respite from the crowds of tourists in the larger German cities. Situated at the confluence of the Danube, Regen and Naab rivers, Regensburg is easily reached by Autobahn or train from Munich and Nuremburg. I got to visit this wonderful city when I was working with a German company in 1995.

Cruising the Canals of Amsterdam

Cruising the Canals of Amsterdam

What better way to enjoy Amsterdam than walking it’s streets, is cruising it’s famous canals. The capital city of The Netherlands has more than 100km of canals criss-crossing the city. With about 90 islands and 1,500 bridges running over the canals, boats are a way of life here. So much so, that Amsterdam is also known as the Venice of the North. Milan Day Trip

Milan Day Trip

So what do you do if you only have 1 day in Milan, the world’s foremost fashion capitol? This was one of the ‘First World’ problems I had to face when I was figuring out how to spend my weekends in Switzerland while I was there for training. Milan is only a 4 hour train ride from Zurich, and taking the 8am train means that I arrive in Milan just in time for an Italian lunch. Continue reading “Milan Day Trip”

Jungfraujoch

Jungfraujoch

When I hear someone describe their trip to Switzerland, very often it’s about visiting the Swiss Alps. The Swiss Alps is a generic term and there are more mountains than you can shake your hat at in Switzerland. Previously, I had blogged about Zermatt, a ski resort for the rich and famous. Unlike Zermatt which is all about the majesty of the Matterhorn, Jungfraujoch is all about ‘in your face’ Swiss Alps tourism.
